I came to Buddhism in my twenties—for lots of reasons. But one of the main reasons was its emphasis on our basic goodness. I just hadn’t been able to grasp the idea of sin that came to me through Christianity, and in Buddhism I found not a religion, but a way of thinking about human nature and human potential that sat well with me.
In the very first chapter of The Wise Heart, Jack Kornfield establishes his belief in our “original goodness, our Buddha nature.” I’m happy already with this book. How many things in my life would be different if I truly, truly incorporated this at the cellular level, instead of merely holding it as a belief in my head? Oh my god, it’s huge.
So as you know, my mantra for the coming year is “I am ready.” You'll hear it a lot from me. I'll begin by saying: I am ready to embrace my Buddha nature. That’s a grand start for the new year. What will be different if I do this? Can you help me notice when I demonstrate an action that contradicts this assertion?
